TEXTS
An Exhibition of two Macedonian Artists:
Zaneta Vangeli & Stanko Pavleski
at: La MaMa La Galleria, New York
April 8-12. 1997
It will be our pleasure to meet you at the opening reception on April 8, 6-9 PM
About the Exhibition
The exhibition; TEXTS is related to the two approaches towards the text as an artistic exponent of the conceptual underpinnings in the works of Zaneta Vangeli & Stanko Pavleski. The TEXTS exhibit defines the approach towards the artistic articulation of the attitude of the artist: the present and the artist: reality and the artist: society and the artist. The chosen works of the two Macedonian artists show their attitude towards two conditions.
The first condition (Vangeli) writes about the view towards the outside and places the artist in a position in which his/her role is determined by making parallels in the present with documents of the past. Vangeli juxaposes extracts from the New Testament against present day events. Vangeli chooses two parallel texts: The Epistles of St. Paul to the Colossians and to the Philippians and the daily newspaper Nova Makedonija from July 6. 1996. Then, she manuscripts the texts on transparent paper. The juxtapositions of the ancient canonized text with the text of everyday life stresses the condition of the daily-political role which religion has assumed in the post-communist period in which secular values are displaced. But, the provided value is also problematic: to supplant the unmodulated religious values of the past with equivilant values of the present, makes out of them a pseudo-values and pseudo-issues.
The second condition (Pavleski) writes about the view towards the inner and places the artist in role of drawing parallels with present experiences. Pavleski explores, with the text, the inner happenings through which the artist passes or which he/she lives with. The concept of an open and public discovering of all these processes, which reveal the inner life of the artist, is squeezing through the text (which in fact goes by lining up words). Pavleski does not realize this public communication by his (physical) presence, but by re-creating his presence through the presentation of the physical artifacts of his conceptualized artistic process. The texts that he prints on the brass plates present a commentary on the process of thinking as the sole carrier in the process of artistic shaping. The elevation of the text to the level of artistic expression not only brings the text into the realm of high art, but shows the role of the artist and how he is positioned in society. The encroachment for public declaration on this condition (the conceptual background) is artistically designed as a high art element (the creative background): the text becomes an 'image'.
The opposing of these two approaches towards the text (i.e. the textual potentialities for artistic creation) is developing in the installing of the works of art in the context of a gallery space one opposite to the other: opposite to the transparentness of the works of Vangeli the 'heavy' outcasts of Pavleski are placed; opposite to the 'manuscripting' of the text on the paper of the former stays the 'printing' of the text on the brass plates of the latter; opposite to the 'outside' stays the 'inner'; opposite to the 'comment' stays the 'confession'. But, both the texts are speaking about the position of the artist and the necessity of her/his statement in the present.
About the Artists
Zaneta Vangeli [1963] and Stanko Pavleski [1959] belong to the generation of artists who represent the most relevant trends in Macedonian art today. For more than a decade they have been part of the establishing of the most important streams of artistic activity in Macedonian art and are an important part of the foundation of contemporary artistic culture in this region. As representatives of the younger middle generation since the middle and the second half of the eighties they have evolved specific approaches and unusual concepts of art, through which they took up the responsibilities for the radical changes in Macedonian art during that period. Since their first solo exhibitions [Vangeli-1987, Pavleski-1985] they attracted the attention of the art critic and have since remained at the forefront of Macedonian art, both locally and abroad. Both have received purchace awards for their opuses. [See. CVs]
