"The Actor's Hubris"

Long ago you entered a city of nine gates.
Two eyes to see.
Two nostrils to smell.
Two ears to hear.
The genitals to procreate.
The rectum to evacuate.
A mouth to taste and speak;
exposing one’s passions to the public view.

when all this is finished
throw down the high places
and brake the images in pieces
until they are utterly destroyed.
[becoming] the material remains of past cultures
[devoid of emotional content].
Heaps which perish [silently] and which are [never again] assembled.
[surrounded by supposed holy men and scientists]
who are assembled below to busy themselves upon the mass of original matters:
copious and well-documented evidence of bones and artifacts:
broken glass vessels, cruets, mustard-pots, tumblers, wine-glasses, bottles
[where a] certain number of cart-loads,
having been raked and searched for all the different things,
[were all then brought to] a big microscope that allows you to view things at hundreds of times magnification

(This  is the actor's hubris,
to imagine the world possessed of a single,
avid eye fixed solely and always on him.)

[all of this evidence was then] compiled into heaps of well organized, timely, and concise information:
an apparently heterogeneous collection of objects,
assembled, it would seem, without obvious rhyme or reason
[like] little wheels and springs of metal,
as if someone had gutted a mechanical toy and left the parts scattered about
[these being] the five heaps - the five parts of a person -
[which] were empty of any nature of their own
succumbing to an inglorious fate in the scrap heaps [of belief]
and junk yards of America; [tombs of material desire] .
Theorists are having a great deal of difficulty
in coaxing a sufficient amount of variety from these rather smooth and featureless,
nondescript things over [their] little fires [tended] under corrugated iron shelters,
But it puts things into context surely...

Book 2 #69  -  01/15/2002 4:50 PM

leap into the void of uncertainty
build a machine capable of travel to the heavens.
[that constructs] poetry immediately

[but what are you going to do when]
suddenly confronted with a huge mass of people who see things very differently?

Man's existence is just the tiniest,
most insignificant moment in the grand scheme of things.
We know (from Pure Reason) that the objects
which appear to us are, subjectively and transcendentally speaking,
really no more than figments of our imagination,
a ray of hope shimmering in the mind.
[consider,] perhaps every death is sudden and untimely.
root around in ideological compost heaps [if you must but]
Sooner or later, this residential city will be destroyed and you will be evicted

I do not wish to dwell on the ruthless,
remorseless, efficient, step-by-step,
‘tear-back-the-top-to-allow-venting-and- microwave-five-minutes’ [style of] killing
[moving] systematically from room to room, from floor to floor.

There are no `bad guys' to point your finger at
in silent, pursed-lipped condemnation.
Read on. It's true.
We will NOT re-direct you around and around in a loop

Is it getting troublesome keeping track [of yourself]
when you fall asleep?

Book 2 #70  -  02/10/2002 8:35 PM

So, to be fair:
Recently I had a discussion with one very prominent composer
and we argued about meaning
WHAT MEANS THE MUSIC TO YOU?
One could argue ok?
I myself can think of only a few topics more interesting.
Interesting, I guess, looking at the big picture
as interpreted by untrained eyes.
p.s. don't try to answer this question.
So what is the answer?
Members of this list anger very easily...
I for example have a running argument with myself
when a serene or crystalline moment is upon me.
However, I cannot imagine a time in the near future
[or the distant future for that matter]
silliness does seem to abound.
But, uh, what do you expect
Some of the poems were funny,
some made no sense whatsoever and
some were beautiful.
second question: Sound familiar?
A question in my mind:
Importance of a composer is not measurable in numbers of performances
or how many CDs are available in shops?
p.s. there's no doubt that Cage is important.
I think the history of sound must be divided in two periods:
before Cage and after Cage.
But, uh, what do you expect
No repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of what comes.
No
No repetition
No repetition will
No repetition will ever
No repetition will ever exhaust
No repetition will ever exhaust the novelty
No repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of what
No repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of who
No repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of why
No repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of where
No repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of when
No repetition will ever exhaust the novelty of how
the novelty of how who
the novelty of how what
the novelty of how why
the novelty of how where
the novelty of how when
the novelty of how come
the novelty of testing
That wasn't anger, it was practical advice.
Why waste your time arguing over whether or not Cage will be remembered?
it's best to look after our own affairs
and let historians and college students look after history.
why exactly are you signed on to this list?
One thing is important
John Cage will be forgotten
[forget Cage now get out of the Cage cage]
What does it matter?
Cage is dead;
make your own music,
Not that globalization doesn't cast the shadow of a Republican
experimental music,
even some composed by Americans,
is still being made around the globe.
The vast majority produces nothing but noise,
[but] all sounds are worthy of note
the key is
The American idea of success:
shouting louder
than the [other] people
[followed by] very intelligent criticisms [and] superficially "easy" [commentary]
[saturated in] the omnipresence of advertising
this in no way has to do with the quality or importance
Does anyone know if that is the case, and if so, where it can be obtained?
Anyone know anything about this?
Does anyone know if there is any book or any thesis?
The fact that we *don't* hear a nearly sufficient amount of experimental music
in American concert halls or on many university campuses
[is because composers are not using these venues any more]
[They are] Mapping [from] the Studio
[and] in a second-hand bookshop in Germany
I am looking
Try looking up
Just wanted to say that it's nice to see
My view is, naturally, colored by living
As I said, make your own music.
I am planning to work
writing has had quite a significant impact.
That was the answer,
do you have any [other] suggestion?
Hope this helps.

Book Two #72 - 4/2/2002 1:47:26 AM

I just got a new webcam
to be honest, I think my scanner gets lonely
It's not a very bright computer peripheral
It gets jealous: they can’t stand the sight of each other
[the scanner] just doesn't feel important anymore.
Most users don’t even think about such things.
[but] you can have a keyboard lockup, all your data lost
or, worst case scenario - damaged motherboard
from an [angry] scanner
You really can make friends [with your scanner]
by scanning very interesting samples
[so] I just collect images from all over:
daily media,
old books from thrift shops,
and now off the net too.
and I wanted to let you in on the secret.
Watch ALL bizarre images created from destruction.
[this] also allows for complete [scanner loyalty].

Book Two #73 - 6/30/2002 7:07:29 PM

TV babble is hot to trot.
A maddening quantum unreality has been leaking
into the reservoir of our common experience:
events that are rarely acknowledged.
[if] nobody is paying proper attention
The mysterious force driving men;
the unleashed desires of the young
will have a corrosive effect.
I do not care to spell out the details

The primitive instinct seeks control
for plotting to rule the world.
Think of revolution in terms
of a freshly created poetic language.
My aim is to put the romance back in language
capable of being dangerous.
Text truly reveals the hidden designs of power and its vulnerabilities.
This is not just propaganda and that's a promise.

Risk everything
poetically, and most of all.... spiritually.
Be willing to pursue intuition.
Your efforts will not be wasted.
Confusion leads to a new kind of clarity
opening to promising new possibilities.

The kingdom of Massurrealist poetry is nothing but
an antenna to tune in directly to the Almighty.
Authentic revelation is forever available directly to those brave enough to seek it out.
Open the collective consciousness of the mystic to Everyman!
Some creative souls fall by chance instinct upon Nature's hidden mercy: genius
Genius is that flower which blossoms.
God is present in everything;
is at the heart of all things.
See the totality of things as a whole:
The enigma of wave/particle.

Book Two #74 - 7/7/2002 12:42:24 PM

America is the land of lawyers
law enforcement and insurance agents.
They position themselves as protectors of the public good;
A school for crime.
Crime does pay, and it pays handsomely.
Such is the logic of our situation.
Each and every one of these people are
more interested in making money than protecting people
looking to apprehend and punish in order to justify their employment.
Their message: “no one is safe”.

Today the law is clear:
The purpose is to intimidate
[through] the weapon of mass misinformation
authorized by a secret agency of the United States Government.
change happens so slowly and carefully
in time, and by slow operations, [information is] perverted into tyranny.
The tyranny of expiration dates.

They Want You Brain Dead
There is enough (evidence) to raise some serious questions
see for yourself if there is not something truly disturbing happening here.
What you will see is an accumulation of facts and disturbing patterns of behavior.
Are you aware:
Heavily armed troops may enter the city at any time
Controversy is nearly unavoidable in such issues
Could it be we are wiling captives of what has come to be known as the tyranny of the urgent?
Blame yourselves, therefore, for what is today transpiring.

Be careful with that cell phone!
lest you accidentally become entangled in a private affair
of [government] phantoms
“How can I avoid these pops and clicks?”
You might ask.
[It] is the sound of
stepping on pins and needles.

Book Two #76 - Monday, 11 November, 2002

An acquaintance recently stated that
"classic information theory just doesn't cut it anymore"
like paranormal psychology or something
That just won't cut it, pal.
aggressively simple in its form,
very similar in style to early American minimalism
it has those moments of total beauty
to take your breath away.
[like a] PERIOD!

I can think of no other explanation for these disturbing questions
[it is] a really edgy [way to look at things]
Are your thoughts and beliefs keeping you a prisoner in your own mind?
Can you escape…?
held prisoner by you own thoughts
such fears may be justified.
Written words won't disappear
These are words that will always remain true:
everything has its coming forth and passing away.

The universe is - in fact - in a state of collapse
We are so accustomed to the pressure
[everything] seems to be continually ending.
How can I avoid these pops and clicks?
You might ask.
[It] is the sound of digital dreams
Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right.
Obviously, nobody really knows what's going on,
Yet when it comes to exposing a clever fraud, the devil is in the details.

An important observation regarding the relative seriousness of the issue before us;
In paradox some truth exists.
who would want to give up such a promising idea, such a relieving belief?
You can go search for it.
It includes so many artists that you've never heard about!
I was nicely bewildered.
Something about collecting and categorizing
that gives a feeling of order and security on one hand,
but seems sick and demented on the other.
So pop in and I'll show you all the delights
And maybe steal enough milk from my flatmates for a cup of tea for you...

Actually I must tell a story - all too true - along this line.
more like an anti-philosophy construction kit
Its ok having all these specialist people running around doing stuff
there is this idea of a perfect art piece,

There is no language of the world of timbre and spatiality
sadly, textures dissolve in the mind
so now I remain longing
so what is left?
Not trying to sound like an idiot,
but i have no idea where we are then.

A long time ago in a mexican cafeteria full of quadra-paks of milk
and exquisite packets of expired rasberry jam.
Funny thing, I'd love to give a home to all this "old junk"
(it makes me feel all yukky).
i am mostly clueless what it is that it is doing
From our human viewpoint

Participate today, if the mood strikes, but PLEASE reply directly.

Sorry for the length and pointlessness of this
in it's unnecessaryness, this truly is going to be a monumental moment
while taking on the saturated gesture of a creator

Book Two #77 - Monday, 11 November, 2002

Sex-crazed butterfly swarms

a few things about this whole blind date issue tussle.
I'm not wading in with moral support
i find myself a little shocked,
in fact, i'm not even sure I think this can be called art...
its a comment on the isolation people feel for each other in these times

their methods of sexuality are so strange
The female will even eat their dead brothers.
But although this may be an attractive strategy for improving your chances of survival,
there is a price to pay for getting rid of your siblings.

context.
context is everything.

questionable and objectionable behaviour does not make for art....
I might be stepping on pins and needles
there's definitely a couple of lines been crossed here,
as well as some wires it would seem.

This isn't an option as far as I can see.
what is the rationale behind this grotesque misallocation
As numerous critics have noted in passing
I imagine that I have a few days left of life.
I mean, if you're going to be dead, you may as well get laid, right? ;)
Over 500 measurable industrial chemicals are now found in our bodies
including a range linked to adverse trans generational health effects

though it seems equally evident
You can be my Yoko Ono
A proto-Madonna pop star.

Book Two #78 - Monday, 11 November, 2002

Refuse to be tyrannized by the urgent [and]
the effects of the mechanistic dogma foisted upon us:
a rational enterprise of unparalleled success!
I have baskets full of books that survived a tornado.

We've made an enormous amount of progress in the past few years,
but now realize the greater depth of our ignorance.
The widening gaps between rich and poor …
will undermine the fabric of our societies
through confrontation, violence and civil disorder.
[They] are only the product of the past and the victims of the present.

The exploration of disturbing emotional issues [makes]
the space we inhabit takes on the features of a quivering jelly.
What was most objectionable one moment
was quickly submerged into something else even more objectionable.
[but this is] merely a surface phenomenon of consciousness

The inner world is full of phantoms and will-o'-the-wisps.
Very few people know how to find these assets or what to do when they are found.
Indeed.
Yet, 'big claim' makers come in all shapes and sizes with all types of babble.

Do you not know that love keeps no record of wrongs?
the time has come to gallop to the sublime
i get enough exercise just pushing my luck
I do regular stretching to compensate for all the time I spend on my ass in front of the monitor
wondering if I'd been injected with Purple Dye No 5.

Once again I ask are you reading my posts or just skimming.
uh hu! and i'm like urr, blond, um you know... cool!
uh hu uh hu hee hee hee !!! ;-)

(sorry if this isn't clear I'm still waiting for the black tea to kick in)
